This book will help physical education teachers incorporate biomechanics concepts and principles in their lesson plans by helping them to understand how to assess student learning of biomechanics concepts. The importance of teaching concepts is reflected in Standard 2 of the national standards for physical education, which states that students will demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts. By teaching concepts such as balance, force absorption, Newton’s laws, spin, rotation, and resistance while teaching motor skills, teachers will be helping students apply this knowledge to new physical activity experiences.
The assessment examples in this book include all three types of assessment tools traditional, alternative, and authentic -- and emphasize the variety of ways that can be used to assess biomechanics topics. Samples and descriptions of specific tools include multiple choice questions, short answer questions, essay questions, role playing/simulations, guided discovery, research reports, and projects. The author explains when to use each type of assessment depending on the level of understanding a student is expected to have.
The author has provided more help for teachers by including the steps for creating a rubric to score the students’ work.
