Quality Physical Education and Healthy Beverage Options
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the
American Beverage Association (ABA) have teamed up to help get America’s
schoolchildren healthy.
In 2004, President George W. Bush signed into law the Child Nutrition Reauthorization
Act that required every school district participating in the federal schools
meal program (a vast majority of school districts) to implement a wellness
policy. The policy, at a minimum, must include goals for physical activity,
nutrition education and other school-based activities designed to promote student
wellness and nutrition guidelines for all foods available on the school campus
during the school day.
This collaboration can show schools that meeting the wellness policy requirement
can be easy by teaching students the importance of balancing “calories
in” with “calories out” through a quality physical education
program and the adoption of the School Beverage Guidelines developed by ABA
and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
Use the resources on this Web site to promote the benefits of quality physical
education and healthy beverage options to create healthier school environments
for students nationwide.
